Josh The Funky 1 hails from Chicago, the home of House Music. A DJ for over a decade his style covers the gamut of House, from Uplifting Vocals to Dirty Tech.... Pumpin Big-room to Jacking Chicago....its representative of the influences and fusions heard around the world in modern House Music. Ever the performer, “The Funky 1” has become synonymous with using scratching, loops, acapellas, & effects, while also playing on three CDJ decks, allowing for an unparallel level of creativity in his live sets.
Coming from a city so deeply rooted in House Music, it was interestingly enough hip-hop and the sub-culture around it that initially sparked his interest to pursue a career in the DJ world. Buying a pair of decks while still in grade school, Josh discovered the art of scratching and was instantly mesmerized. His passion and persistence for the art form proved to be worthwhile, as he has since become a D.M.C. Midwest Finalist and a winner of the W.M.C.- D.J. Spin-Off Battle. His first exposure to house music came through Chicago radio station B96 (96.3 fm), where every Friday and Saturday night he locked into the sounds of DJ’s Julian “jumpin” Perez and Bad Boy Bill. It’s only naturally fitting then that in 2001 Josh The Funky 1 was hired to became a weekly resident on the exact same Mix Show that initially hooked him in. Nowadays you can find Josh at the forefront of digital era, with his own Radio Podcast on I-tunes, allowing him to go beyond the Chicago airwaves and reach a global audience of listeners.
As is the natural progression for DJ’s to start producing their own music, it was while still a teenager that Josh found himself releasing his first original productions on Chicago based label, International House Records (I.H.R.). Owned by the legendary DJ, Bad Boy Bill, he quickly snapped up Josh’s single “Been in Love” and featured it on the “Bangin The Box 3” mix compilation. It was soon after that Josh was personally enlisted by Bad Boy Bill to help co-produce his mix CD’s "Bangin the Box Vol. 4" and "Banging in London". Looking to make his own mark Josh began his underground Mix Compilation series entitled “House Funktion”, it laid the foundation for him and became a cult following within the scene. It was this foundation that eventually led to his first legitimate mix compilation entitled “Universal Sound", released on the prestigious System Recordings, home to DJs such as Junior Sanchez, Richard Vission, & Danny Tenaglia.
Never one to be content, Josh also found and launched his own label, Funktion Recordings in 2001. Set up as an outlet for both international artists as well as his own output, he began a partnership with long time friend and associate, Gus Calderone in 2005. Both passionate and sharing the same vision, they have worked tirelessly at bringing the U.S. based label to the forefront of the International Dance Music world. Now with releases from a who’s who of producers including Kid Crème, Jaimie Fanatic, Calvertron, Will Bailey, Granite &Phunk, Ian Carey, and Franky Rizardo, the label is firmly cemented into the fabric of Dance Culture. Of course the label has also featured Josh’s own releases including his tracks “Universal Sound”(featured on Robbie Riveras, “Juicy Miami” Mix Compilation) “Konstruction” (featured on DJ Boris “Believe 2” Mix Compilation), “It’s The Music”, while also allowing him to remix artists like Patrick Alavi, Harrison Crump, and Asle Bjorn. Now in 2008, he plans to further increase his output of original material/remixes more so then ever. With Mixmag magazine touting him as one to watch and having already toured through the UK, Germany, North America, expect the unexpected from one of Americas next globe-trotting DJ’s.
